In 2007, astronomers around the world watched Uranus’s equinox. It was a history-making event. The last equinox on Uranus was in the 1960s. No one even knew Uranus had rings back then. “We’re seeing the rings edge-on for the first time since they were discovered in 1977,” said an excited Mark Showalter. The astronomer was on the Hubble Space Telescope team that discovered two of these faint rings around Uranus in 2003.

Uranus orbits tilted over on its side, so its rings wrap around the planet from top to bottom, like circles around a target. Earth’s view of Uranus’s rings changes as the seventh planet orbits the Sun—from edge-on to full circle.
